I always hear people say it's too dangerous to bike in Miami. Here's a state secret: government and the voters decide what our community should look like and how our money should be spent on construction. If people who are concerned about pedestrian and bicycle safety actually go to government meetings and express the desire for facilities, they may actually become reality. I'm not even going into the "it is our duty as citizens" part. So kudos to you. I bike in Coral Gables, South Miami & Pinecrest and attend the public Miami-Dade Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. Many decisions are made there as well that affect us all. Groups like the Green Mobility Network are worthy of our support as advocates. Congratulations to you for attending this government meeting. I am new to bike advocacy & have been tentative to really get involved (even though I tend to be a joiner and a passionate advocate for things I believe in). I've had this idea that "I just want to ride my ride my bike" and leave it at that. But I think it is impossible to leave it at that & I am trying to figure out where I can best put my limited energies that already have competing interests with parenting young kids and a full-time job outside of the home. I do believe that commuting daily with kids already makes me a bike advocate, but I do think I need to step a bit beyond that to make my city a fun and safe place for all folks to cycle.
